What we do
Custom Jewelry and Heirloom Redesign
Work with our designers to create a one-of-a-kind piece or redesign your existing family heirlooms into a new piece you’ll want to wear every day. All ideas are welcome and we’ll guide you through our process from design to prototype to hand-creating the piece.
How it Works
Custom combines the newest jewelry technology with ancient metalsmith techniques to create our commissioned, one-of-a-kind pieces.
During consultations we collaborate with you to come up with an initial design direction. You can have as much input or as little input in the design, and we encourage customers to bring pictures, magazine clippings, or sketches to help illustrate the types of design that inspires them.
Consultations can either be done in person at the shop or via e-mail and phone for our long-distance customers.
During the consultation we’ll give you a price estimate, based on the initial design direction. To begin building the initial design, we require a 50% deposit at the end of the consultation phase.
After the deposit is given, we’ll assign you to a designer, who will take the next 2-3 weeks to flesh out and build the initial design.
Your designer will either use our CAD 3D modeling program to create initial images of your design, or hand-carve a wax from which we will cast your piece.
You will get to make changes and alterations to the design, and we never move forward with casting until you give your approval.
Major changes may require a new estimate of the project and an adjustment of the deposit.
We cast and hand-finish your piece, setting stones, and fabricating the final product, as needed.
Custom Pieces and Heirloom Redesign average between $2000 – $4000.00, but can be higher or lower depending on the project. Before work starts, Custom will create an estimate specific to your project, based on the following categories.
This fee is your major labor cost. The design fee covers everything from design work and changes to casting and finishing the approved piece. This fee also includes one 3D prototype during each round of design. Design fees are based on the overall complexity of the piece.
Custom uses only fine metals (silver, gold, palladium, and platinum). Your metal cost will be based on overall weight of your piece and market price on the day we cast.
This is based on the cost of any stones used in your project and the labor to set them in the finished piece. If you are providing your own stones, then this category will only be a setting fee.
This will be used for non-standard items that occur in the jewelry-making process, such as:
- Hand Engraving
- Rhodium Plating
- Additional Casting Fees
- Additional Labor Fees if the project is multiple pieces

Lee Lally, Co-owner, Master Jeweler
A master jeweler with over 20 years experience, Lee’s bold aesthetic and jeweler’s intuition help him create pieces that are as beautiful as they are timeless. Educated by the Holland School of Jewelry and the Revere Academy, Lee has been a JA Certified Jeweler for 15 years. After many years in the industry, he and his wife, Kate, opened Custom as a place for makers to have a voice of their own. When not metal-slinging at the shop, you can find Lee hanging with his family, trying not to get speeding tickets on his motorcycle, and supporting other local artists in the NODA neighborhood.
Kate McFadden, Co-owner, Designer
A maker with a penchant for fashion, Kate spent years as an entrepreneur honing her vision and voice. After meeting her husband, Lee, her worldly view and business know-how married with his longtime knowledge of the jewelry industry to create Custom. The den-mother and visionary of the organization, her designs are always fashion-forward, beautiful, and on the pulse of what women want to wear. When not in the studio designing, you can find Kate nurturing her beautiful family, practicing yoga at the local studio, and throwing clay on her pottery wheel.
Lindsay Parker, Shop Manager, Designer
A historian who finds beauty in the ridiculous, Lindsay came to Custom after spending years as Product Designer in the tech industry. A degree-holding Archaeologist who spent her summers digging up artifacts, Lindsay’s designs bridge her passion for the past with her curiosity of the future. When not designing and making jewelry, you can find her renovating her 1940s bungalow, trying out Charlotte’s wonderful eateries with her husband, or trying to hug her disinterested cat.
